Real Christian or Fake Christian?

I have something on my mind. Why does it seem like many of todays' Christians don't even try to set themselves apart from the world? I'm not saying that Christians are perfect and can do no wrong, but shouldn't we try to be a light? Shouldn't we try not to curse, lie, steal, fornicate and commit adultery?

It seems like todays' Christians think it's perfectly normal to break all of God's commandments. There is no guilt, no conviction or anything. Why do we act like that's ok? It's not. Jesus wants us to be his example in this world. How can we be his example when people can't even tell us from the unsaved people!

I guess sometimes I get really upset when I see this because I make a real effort to be obedient to God. I would like to know that there are others out there who believe that our lives should be different from the world's. Are there others out there who feel like I do or is it just wishful thinking? I'd love to make friends with some people who are earnest about thier Christian walk; not just people who profess Christ and bear absolutely no fruit at all! I'm talking about people who don't even think it's necessary to try. What is that about?

Hey Rachel -
Got your comment about twitter - and I signed up for it - but I confess that I have no idea what to do with it!

On this post:
I understand exactly what you're saying here - that we are purposed to be set apart -
However, I would say that all the shoulds in the world doesn't get people there. When we try it seems we always fall short - and the people who are somewhat successful often are only putting on the face of obedience, but their hearts are far from Him. This is a transformation that takes place in the intimacies of relationship with Father. It can't be forced. Sometimes what we are seeing is real people in process.
But I feel ya.

Just found your blog from Facebook. It is so true that as Christians we are to be the salt and light of the world and it is frustrating when other believes do not live as such, but still we need to love them

Thanx for the comments! I hope I didn't come off as uncaring, I guess I just get frustrated sometimes. I know that we're all at different stages in our walk but it just seems like some people have no intention of ever even trying to do right. But that's just not for me to worry about now is it?

Two different verses immediately come to mind as I read this.

We are called to be holy just as God is holy. To be holy is to be set apart.

Romans 12:1-2 also immediately comes to mind. Do not be conformed to the patterns of this word but be ye transformed! We are to be living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God!

I think, as Christians, we don't have a choice about being set apart. We are instructed to do just that. Are we striving with everything in our beings to be sure our words and actions are "pleasing to God?"

Granted, we are each at different places in our relationship and walk with Christ, but we should each be striving to become more like Him and less like the world around us!

What an excellent and challenging post!

Let me also add that I am so thankful it is not up to me to determine this in the heart's of others.

I am to come alongside them and love them regardless, but be prepared to answer to my own heart!

Very nice post. I understand where you are coming from and agree.

However, I think some people use this to be "bible thumping" Christians. Unfortunately, this turns off many people around us and has a negative effect. The very people that we need to reach are being driven away.

I agree that we don't need to act like the world but it is important that we interact with those who need hear about the Good News that we have to share.

It's all in their motivations. It kind of shows what's important to them. Some go to church for God, others for show.

I really got some good comments on this post and I appreciate everyone's input. I just hope that more Christians begin to give God top priority in thier lives. He is always faithful. He can do all that we can't!

He wants to get out of the Sunday Morning box we put Him in!
